Profile
The unit develops its activity in optoelectronics, mainly in fibre optic technology and microfabrication. It is oriented to applied research in fibre optic sources, optical communications, fibre optic sensing and microfabrication (thin films and integrated optics), seeking also opportunities for technology transfer to Portuguese industrial companies through its competencies on electronic systems design and integration. Its activity provides the framework for post graduation of students, particularly from the Physics Department and the Electronic Engineering Department of Porto University. During the years, R&D collaborations have been stablished with prestigious national and international institutions (either Universities, Institutes or Companies), frequently supported by joint R&D projects.
Immediate Goals
Presently, the priorities of the Unit are: to strengthen its qualification in the mentioned R&D fields and to implement stronger cross-fertilisation between them through the selection of adequate R&D projects and institutional links; to start a process of reinvestment in order to maintain a state of the art technological infrastructure.
